I looked for the Blind Watchmaker’s workshop but couldn’t find it. Many others were also searching. I asked them for directions but they had nothing to offer except for a few dead ends.
What I did find was the “Watchmaker,” away from any shop, producing tornadoes, floods, earthquakes and a sun that is predicted to burn out in a few million years as well as many activities that were more benign. Apart from life, there was nothing creative or productive to be seen.
In the realm of life I spotted a number of watchmaker wannabes, adjusting time, resizing wristbands and cleaning debris from the escapements. I searched diligently but found no new timepieces nor any in process.
In contrast, I paused for a moment and looked around. I saw a computer, a television, furniture, books and a myriad of other things, all of which had their origin in intelligent activity. My observations uncovered only one source capable of fashioning the cogs of existence.
If the blind watchmaker could make a serviceable timepiece, his sighted apprentice should be able to perform the task much more quickly or easily.
